The Quest is over!

Thank you all for participating in Godiva's Quest 1T8! Congratulations to the top 3 teams:

3. Connor, Fan, and Tania - TeamFerosh

2. David, Cindy, and Rebekah - snsd

1. Shuyi - Yolo Swaggins

Since Shuyi was one of the Questmasters 1T7, she is ineligible to win. So, your Questmasters 1T9 are team snsd!

Solutions to the puzzles should be out today (Jan 8th), so keep an eye out for that.

It was a pleasure running the Quest this year, and we hope everyone enjoyed it. See you next year!

Hackerman, aka Oscar and Yuming

As you can see, Godiva's Quest has been hacked. You can say goodbye to your precious puzzles. There's no hope for Skule anymore. The spirit of Godiva Week is gone. Unless, of course, you can find out who I am. But really, do you think you can do that? I've hidden myself behind passwords on passwords, and there is no way for you to crack them. However, you can certainly try.

Here is how things are going to work.

Update 3: January 2 12:24 PM - Happy new year! It's the questmasters here, and we have access to the website again! What a great way to start the year off. Now, it's time to find the person who did this. Act 3 is now out!

Update 2: December 26 12:25 AM - Merry (belated) Christmas! My gift to you is nothing! Wait, what's that page that showed up? How mysterious...

Update 1: December 18 7:40 PM - The first official Act has been released. And I know what you're thinking. "You're late, Hackerman!" Well, to that, I say that I never specified a time. I insincerely apologize for that.

My passwords are divided into four Acts. As you get further in the Quest, the difficulty of cracking my passwords increases. If you really wish to find my identity, you will have to find the 3 main passwords: the solutions to meta-puzzles in Acts 1 to 3. However, you won't be able to do that unless you solve most of the puzzles in the Act.

I'll tell you what. I'll give you a little bit of false hope. I've released the first Act (zero indexed, of course). Here's a chance to solve some simple puzzles to get ready for the real deal. You may notice that they lack instructions. Obviously, I'm not going to make it that easy. However, all the information you need to find the password is on the page. You can use Google, Wikipedia, whatever you like to help you. Each password is an alphanumeric word or phrase, contain no punctuation or spaces, and are case insensitive (weak passwords, I know).

Act 1 will be released on Monday, December 18th. Subsequent Acts will be released on the following Mondays.

If you can be the first person or team to find my identity by 11:59 PM on January 7th, then I'll consider you as the winner. If no one finds me by then, well, the Quest will be mine forever. Okay, maybe not. I'll be nice and I'll say you're a winner if you crack the most passwords.

If you happen to be the winner, then you get the privilege of knowing who I am. Also, the winner gets the position of judge for Ye Grande Olde Chariot Race at Godiva Week. You also win the title of Questmaster(s) 1T9, and I'll give back the quest (I'm just having some fun taking over from those idiot Questmasters 1T8). The Quest will be yours to design next year. Lastly, the top three teams will receive a patch commemorating my takeover of the Quest in the year 1T8.

Since I'm so generous, I will give every team 3 hints. If you solve the Act 0 meta-puzzle, I'll even give you an extra hint. Honestly, you should be grovelling at my feet for that. I've taken over the Questmasters' email account, so feel free to ask me for a hint at Let me know which puzzle is causing you trouble, and what information you already know about it, and I'll give you a point in the right direction. You obviously can't contact me any other way; you don't even know who I am. So don't bother.

Any undergraduate student with a valid UToronto email address can try to find me, and can receive patches. However, the winning team must have at least one student from the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto who has completed at least 1 year of studies there. Past Questmasters are also ineligible to win.

Since you'll need all the help you can get, I will allow groups of up to three people to sign up. If you want to change your team members or merge teams, those requests can be made by emailing me before the start of Act 2. The total number of hints a merged team gets is equal to 3 (or 4, if the Act 0 meta-puzzle has been solved) minus the sum of the hints that the two teams have used. If this number is negative, I will not allow the merge.

Collaboration with other teams and individuals is strictly prohibited, as it gives some teams an unfair advantage and makes it difficult to select a single winning team. Violation of this rule may result in disqualification.
